There are no set times for viewing and you visitors can stay as long as they wish. Dippy the dinosaur is a life-size, plaster-of-paris replica of a Diplodocus carnegii skeleton. It became the first Diplodocus to go on display anywhere in the world when it was gifted to the Natural History Museum by Andrew Carnegie on 12 May 1905. The gigantic structure, which was previously based at The Natural History Museum, will be in Coventry for the next three years. Dippy is a replica of a Diplodocus skeleton, which first arrived in London in 1905.

Visitors to the exhibition can learn more about Dippy, the Jurassic period and how the natural world we inhabit has changed over time, with talks and activities for all the family to enjoy. Dippy the Dinosaur will be on display at Coventry’s Herbert Art Gallery & Museum where it will make its home for the next three years. When will the exhibition start? It will take a few months to crochet dinosaurs for novices. Nonetheless, the basic stitches can be learned in a day or week, including the magic ring, single crochet, increase, and invisible decrease. These little T-Rex buddies are unique amigurumi made in the ragdoll-style; separate pieces worked in flat rows and joined together to give it that charming and distinctive 2-D appearance.That’s a real win for crocheters who are new to crocheting stuffed animals! And it certainly doesn’t make them any less adorable than their round counterparts.

The iconic 26-metre long, 4.17 metre-high cast has been loaned to the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum and will be on display in our Covered Court from Monday 20th February as part of the free installation Dippy in Coventry: The Nation’s Favourite Dinosaur. Our Learning Team will share a short, interactive talk with our visitors, aimed at families, but all are welcome. Standing at the feet of this 26-foot Diplodocus, you will learn more about Dippy and get hands-on with some of the fossils from the Herbert’s natural history collection. Discover fun facts about Dippy, the Nation’s favourite dinosaur from the Natural History Museum, along with close encounters with fossils from our collection.
