About this deal

Sharks are known for their unique reproductive strategies. Viviparity is one of the most advanced methods of reproduction, and it is used by some shark species. The first pup to hatch may eat some of its siblings too (fetal cannibalism). This method is the best for creating the most developed pups, as they will need to fend for themselves as soon as they are born, yet ovoviviparous sharks will have very small litters - 1 to 8 pups. Researchersconcluded that the only reason for basking sharks to exert themselves in this way would be as a form of shark mating behavior. The New Zealand Department of Conservation’s shark expert Clinton Duffy, calls Ledgerwood’s testimony “interesting and valuable”. However, his team has yet to verify it and says they would need images or video to do that.

Viviparity is the most advanced method of reproduction. The baby shark develops inside their mother’s body, receiving nutrients and oxygen through an umbilical cord. This is the same method used by mammals. But, unlike mammals, when the pups are born they're immediately independent and have to fend for themselves. At the end of the female biting phase, the male will bite the pectoral fin (or the region around it) of the female and insert one of his claspers into the female. Despite a 30-metre boat approaching, the sharks were “completely preoccupied”, Ledgerwood says, and the Shirley B drifted to within 10 metres of them. Shark’s brain is complex as those of mammals and they have an adequate level of different senses. They can hear, smell, touch, see, and taste. Sharks come in over 500 different species with a wide range of habits. They lay eggs in three main ways: oviparity, viviparity, and ovoviviparity.

When they are ready to mate, the male will hold onto the female. Many female sharks have been noticed with bite marks on their bodies because of this. Some have even been seen missing part of their dorsal fin.

Sharks are known for their ferocity and strength, but they are also fascinating creatures that have a unique way of giving birth. They receive the nutrients and oxygen from an umbilical cord attached to the mother, much like mammals. The young will then live off the placenta until birth. They can also detect electric fields and know where their potential mating partners and their surroundings are. The female shark may spend a long time laying her eggs, ensuring they are securely fixed in a safe place. Depending on the species of shark, they may produce as few as two pups with each reproduction. The largest number of pups produced can be attributed to the Blue Shark which can have up to 135 sharks. That may seem like a lot, but even that isn’t enough. This allows for greater flexibility in breeding, as females can mate with multiple males and still fertilize their eggs. Fertilization

There are numerous shark species in the water, but bull sharks (Carcharhinus Leucas) are one of the most popular. Sea beasts prefer warm water and are more likely to congregate near the coast and shore. Bull sharks can be found in a variety of body of water, including lakes, rivers, and oceans. The bull shark prefers shallow waters for both habitation and territorial sustenance. A bull shark is thought to live for about 16 years on average. A bull shark in captivity can live for up to 32 years. In total, approximately 100,000 bull sharks remain, though the exact number is unknown. The size of the eggs and the number of eggs laid depends on what species of shark we’re looking at. Some are much larger than others, and some species lay more eggs than others. Usually, sharks that reproduce by oviparity will produce between 10 and 200 eggs. Each type has its own characteristics and adaptations that allow sharks to survive and thrive in their respective environments. Viviparity It is very rare to see the glimpses of shark mating as they do usually mate in deep or murky see waters situated at the ocean beds. This is the third in our series of 'I want to know about...' blogs. This one will cover the topic of shark reproduction.

OVIPARITY (egg-laying)

Gestation lasts for about 9-12 months after which the mother will produce a litter of 5-135 pups. Silvertip Sharks
